Founders Red Cooper Self Control

2022 Red Wine – Napa Valley

Daniel William Cooper, MIAMI (OHIO) 1857, was the eldest of the seven founding members and first presiding officer of the Sigma Chi Fraternity.

More mature in years than the others and of sturdy religious training, at 25 years old, he held a place distinctly his own. He is credited with contributing much to the moral and spiritual foundations of the Fraternity. His colleagues came to call him “Old Dan,” a mark of their confidence and affection due to his mature character. Founder Benjamin Piatt Runkle, MIAMI (OHIO) 1857, said of Cooper: “Different from every one of us, he walked among us honored, loved, looked-up to with perfect confidence. By common consent he was the head of the chapter, and no one thought of displacing him.”

Following his graduation from Miami, Cooper attended seminary and was ordained as a Presbyterian minister holding several pastorships. He was the last surviving member of the original seven at Old Miami, passing to the Chapter Eternal in 1920 at age 91.

His badge, the sole remaining of the original seven bearing the letters “ΣΦ,” is traditionally pinned on the newly installed Grand Consul at each Grand Chapter and is on permanent display at the Fraternity Headquarters museum in Evanston, Illinois.

An alluring dark color draws to the damson plum, fig, roasted chestnut and bright herbal essence in the nose of this wine. Very bright and juicy fruit forward on the front of the palate, the wine turns spicy with baking spices and dark fruits wrapped in a full bodied structure that resolves as it coasts into a long finish.

INTRODUCING OUR EVERYDAY PREMIUM COLLECTION

Constantine Conquered

2021 Cabernet Sauvignon – California

Marching toward Rome on October 27th, 312 A.D., Constantine the Great’s forces were pursuing the armies of Maxentius, a challenger to the crown. According to legend, Constantine, before going into battle, saw a cross in the sky with the Greek words “En Toutoi Nika.” Derived from the Latin translation, “In Hoc Signo Vinces,” meaning in this sign you will conquer.

Early the next morning, Constantine dreamed that a voice commanded him to have his soldiers mark upon their shields the letter “X” with a line drawn through it and a mark across the top. Our Founders drew inspiration from the story of Constantine and thus from Constantine’s vision. Its significance for Sigma Chi is Constantine’s discovery of the noble principles in which he believed and for which he was willing to battle.

We introduce you to Constantine Conquered. This 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon from California is a bold and expressive wine, with rich aromas of blackberry, cassis, and dark cherry complemented by hints of mocha and cedar. On the palate, it delivers a full-bodied experience with layers of blackcurrant, plum, and savory notes.

The White Cross

2021 Chardonnay – California

Legend has it that before a crucial battle in 312 A.D., the Roman emperor Constantine the Great dreamt he saw a cross in the sky and heard a voice say: “In Hoc Signo Vinces,” meaning in this sign you will conquer. Substituting a cross for the traditional Roman eagle upon their shields, Constantine defeated his rival.

Our Founders drew inspiration from the story of Constantine and thus from Constantine’s vision. The words of our Founders remind us that “only as the ideals for which this badge stands take possession of my heart and become exemplified in my life will I ever know the true meaning of the White Cross of Sigma Chi.”

We introduce you to The White Cross. This 2021 Chardonnay from California is a beautifully balanced wine, offering vibrant aromas of ripe apple, pear, and citrus, with subtle notes of vanilla and toasted almond.

The Duke

2019 Cabernet Sauvignon – Reserve – Napa Valley

John Wayne is the portrait of an American whose confidence embodies the virtues that are well worth preserving: the dislike for pettiness and love of hard work; the courage to be lonely in pursuing your goals; the respect for individuals in all their determination; and above all, the willingness to fight and die for a cause bigger than yourself. All of that is John Wayne, and it’s neither male nor female, conservative nor liberal. What it is, and always was, is American.

“All I’m for is the liberty of the individual.” – John Wayne

Our flagship Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is a classic representation of the appellation’s preeminent varietal. Notes of black cherry, blackberry and plum are complemented by hits of toasted oak, dried currant and baking spice. Fine-grained tannins and ample brightness on the palate give way to a polished mouthfeel and exceptionally long finish.
